How I gracefully keep my distance from the world #我如何高雅地与这个世界保持距离#

How I gracefully keep my distance from this overly entertainment-focused world:

  1. Only look at screenshots of Xiaohongshu posts that others share on Weibo.
  2. Only watch popular Douyin videos that others repost on Weibo.
  3. Only read Internet news on Douyin that’s being discussed on Weibo’s trending topics.
  4. Only follow hot topics from foreign sites that others repost on Weibo.
  5. Only check out screenshots of WeChat moments that others post on Weibo.

Zhang Ziyi brings her daughter to the red carpet #章子怡走红毯都带着女儿#

Zhang Ziyi brought her daughter to walk the red carpet in Venice. The actress shared a long post about her experience at the “Venice Film Festival”. It has been 18 years since Zhang Ziyi last attended the festival, when she first came with the film The Banquet. In her post, she mentioned how Chinese films like Zhang Yimou’s Not One Less, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s A City of Sadness, Jia Zhangke’s Still Life, and more recently, Pema Tseden’s Jinpa, have all shone brightly in Venice, showcasing the profound depth and vibrant spirit of Chinese culture to the world. She concluded her post by saying, “On the screen, my original aspiration remains unchanged.”

The Internet has made us lose patience #互联网让我们失去了耐心#

The gradual decline in human patience is evident in many aspects of our daily lives. A 2015 study by Microsoft revealed that the average attention span dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to just 8 seconds in 2015. The same study also found that among people aged 65 and older, 10% said, “The first thing I do when nothing holds my attention is pick up my phone.” This behavior is even more common among younger people aged 18 to 24, with 77% doing the same.

A survey by OnePoll indicated that half of the respondents lose patience if the online payment process takes more than 30 seconds. A quarter of people abandon their purchase when asked to re-enter their address, and a third give up when required to re-enter credit card information. Another study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which analyzed the online habits of 6.7 million Internet users, found that 25% of people close a web page if it takes more than 5 seconds to load.

Billboard, the most authoritative singles chart in the Western music industry, reported that the median length of chart-topping songs has decreased from 4 minutes and 6 seconds in 2000 to around 3 minutes and 40 seconds in 2010, and further down to 3 minutes and 31 seconds in 2018.

The loss of patience has also diminished our ability to think critically. Robert Hassan, a professor at the University of Melbourne, wrote in his book The Age of Distraction: Reading, Writing, and Politics in a High-Speed Networked Economy that information technology has accelerated time and social processes. The rapid pace of digital information flow refuses pauses, delays, focus, and reflection, leaving less room for human rationality to function effectively.
