South Korea’s second largest city, Busan, enters disappearing phase #韩国第二大城市釜山进入消失阶段#

A survey indicates that with the exacerbation of low birth rates and an aging population, Busan, South Korea’s second largest city, is showing signs of entering a “disappearing phase” due to population shrinkage. According to South Korean media, Busan is the first major city in the country to exhibit this phenomenon.

Yonhap News Agency, citing a report released by the Korea Employment Information Service at the end of June, reported that Busan’s population decreased from 3.88 million in 1995 to 3.3 million in 2023. As of March this year, the population aged 65 and above in Busan accounted for 23% of the city’s total population, making it the only major city in South Korea to enter a “super-aged society.”

The issue of South Korea’s population has recently drawn renewed attention. According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, in late June, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol officially announced during a “2024 Low Birth Rate and Aging Society Committee Meeting” that South Korea is entering a “population emergency”. President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized that if the trends of low birth rates and aging are not reversed, South Korea’s population could eventually become extinct. He stated that a response system would be initiated nationwide and remain in operation until the issue of the low birth rate is resolved.

Statistics from the South Korean government at the beginning of the year showed that in 2023, the total number of births in South Korea was only about 235,000, setting a historic low. Compared to 2021 and 2022, the birth rate in 2023 decreased by 11% and 8% respectively. As of December 2023, the total population of South Korea was approximately 51.325 million, a year-on-year decrease of about 113,700 people.

In fact, in recent years, warnings about South Korea’s “aging and low birth rate” crisis have been continuously sounding. Some institutions have even stated that if Asia’s fourth largest economy cannot reverse this trend, South Korea will face an aging speed faster than Japan, the “world’s oldest” country.

The Bank of Korea, South Korea’s central bank, warned in a report released last year that if South Korea does not take effective measures to boost the low birth rate, the country’s economy will fall into negative growth by 2050.

On June 29th in Xuchang, Henan Province, an unfamiliar phone number called multiple times before Wang, a local woman, answered and heard crying on the other end. Tian, a woman from Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, explained that she had accidentally transferred 2.26 million yuan to Wang’s Alipay account. Wang, who had never used Alipay before, initially suspected a scam but reassured Tian that she wouldn’t take her money and advised her not to worry.

Wang reported the incident to the police with her daughter. The police summoned both parties to the station for verification. Once it was confirmed that it was not a scam and the source of the funds was verified, Wang returned the entire amount to Tian.

Strong demand expected for iPhone 16 #iPhone16预计需求强劲#

According to a report by CTEE (Commercial Times), the supply chain has revealed that Apple has increased the order volume for its next-generation chips. It is expected to purchase 90 million to 100 million A18 chips from TSMC, reflecting Apple’s anticipation of strong demand for its iPhone 16 series.

The report states that during the initial release of the iPhone 15 series last year, Apple ordered approximately 80 million to 90 million chips from TSMC. This year’s increased order volume suggests that Apple expects higher demand for its new products in 2024.

The “Apple Intelligence” feature added in iOS 18 is expected to boost initial sales. This feature requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro model to run, meaning that users who bought the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus last year will not be able to enjoy Apple’s new AI features unless they upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro or choose an iPhone 16 series model.
