This is the first spectroscopically confirmed and most compelling evidence to date of a repeated partial tidal disruption event (TDE), where a star is partially torn apart by a black hole. This finding is significant for studying TDEs and their underlying physics.
The research was recently published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters under the title “The Unluckiest Star: A Spectroscopically Confirmed Repeated Partial Tidal Disruption Event AT 2022dbl,” and was also reported by Nature magazine.
